Choosing Yarn Colors and Beating Overwhelm
Picking yarn. So fun, so exciting, and oh my. Yes. Overwhelming too. How do you make that final decision which yarny bundle of joy to bring home? It doesn’t have to be agonizing. In fact I suggest making it fun. Here’s this week’s tips for choosing yarn when you’re having trouble.
1. Let someone else you trust decide. Show them your choices and let them pick for you. A fellow knitter, friend, spouse, mailman, or your cat.
2. Go to your local yarn shop and ask them to help you. They are experts with yarn and color.
3. Pick the colors the designer used, or that other knitters used.
4. Write down each of your yarn color choices on a piece of paper, fold them up, and put them into a hat – pick one (no peeking) and use the yarn written on the paper.
5. Write down your yarn colors choices and give each one a number. Roll the dice to see which one “wins”. This also works with darts or picking a card from the deck. Or go to the casino and use the roulette wheel to decide! Make it fun.
Now you may not like the yarn color that other person, your furry companion, or a game of chance picked for you. That’s okay. Their choice might just force you to see which color of yarn you really wanted all along. And if that fails and you are picking yarn from your stash – make the pattern several times with all of your colors.
